Stipends up to $25,000

Presently, the math department supports around 60 graduate students in the form of teaching assistants, scholarships, and awards. Our supported GTAs receive

stipend,
full tuition waivers (excluding fees), and
medical insurance.

The majority of our students are supported by teaching assistantships. Incoming TAs will have a base stipend of $19,500. There are a number of recruiting fellowships, which vary in size, up to $5,000 per year. The department automatically nominates students for these when their application is reviewed.

Summer teaching and research support is available for many graduate students.

Teaching Assistantships

Most students are employed as Graduate Teaching Assistants while earning their degrees. As a new Graduate Teaching Assistant, your transition into the role of educator will be facilitated by a lighter load in your first year. Other Graduate Teaching Assistant duties include grading, working in the Math Center, and assisting in multi-section courses.

Our new GTAs go through a training before their first semester to help them transition into the role of educator.

Presently, graduate students are given support for six years. Students may request extended support as needed.

Departmental Awards and Scholarships

The Mathematics Department makes awards and scholarships to graduate students based on their academic performance, teaching, and citizenship. These include

Harold Huneke Teaching Award,
Richard V. Andree Memorial Scholarship,
Harold Huneke Scholarship,
John Clark Brixey Graduate Scholarship, and
MGSA Good Citizen Award and the MGSA Good Mentor Award. (These two awards are given out by the Math Grad Student Assocication.)

University Awards

The College of Arts and Sciences and Graduate College give out various scholarship and travel awards.

Many of these awards require letters of support from faculty and the deadlines vary. We recommend students review the award criteria early each semester.

External Fellowships

Several of our graduate students are supported by major funding agencies (e.g., NSF, DoD, NSA). Fellowships from these organizations are often substantial and we encourage and support our students in applying for external support. In particular, the AWM keeps a good list of fellowship and travel fund opportunities.
